Brynmawr Beaver Revival
Restoring Wetlands, Revitalizing Community.

The Clun Valley Organic Farm, specifically Brynmawr Farm, nestled in the Shropshire hills, has made a significant stride in ecological restoration by becoming the first farm in the region to receive a license for wild beaver release. This initiative marks a pivotal moment, aligning with the farm's longstanding commitment to harmonious coexistence with nature. The release of beavers, renowned "ecosystem engineers," is set to revitalize the local ecosystem, mirroring the broader understanding of beavers' crucial role in enhancing biodiversity and water resource management.
Brynmawr Farm, operated by the Wheeler family, is a testament to sustainable agriculture. As a mixed livestock organic farm, they prioritize food production that fosters wildlife richness while yielding quality meat products. The farm's participation in a stewardship scheme, coupled with its close collaboration with the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, underscores its dedication to environmental stewardship. They actively

manage two nature reserves, Rhos Fiddle and Mason's Bank, where their rare breed animals graze to promote biodiversity, creating ideal habitats for local wildlife.
The farm's transition to organic practices in 2003, driven by Trevor Wheeler's experience with chemical exposure, showcases a deep-rooted commitment to environmental health. Further extending their passion, the farm began offering eco-friendly holiday accommodations and educational experiences, promoting environmentally gentle food production. The farm’s straw bale building is a testament to this eco conscious effort. The arrival of Gleice, with her farming background, has further strengthened the family's dedication to sustainable farming and ecological balance.
The introduction of beavers into the Clun Valley landscape promises to amplify the farm's ecological efforts. By creating wetlands and ponds, beavers will enhance biodiversity, improve water quality, and increase the landscape's resilience to environmental challenges. This aligns perfectly with the farm's ethos of working in harmony with nature.

The beaver’s natural dam building will help to hold more water on the farm, and in the valley, which will help to reduce flooding downstream, and also help to keep the landscape greener during dry periods.
In essence, Clun Valley Organic Farm, through its beaver release and ongoing sustainable practices, is a beacon of ecological responsibility. Their dedication to organic farming, wildlife conservation, and education demonstrates how agriculture can contribute positively to environmental health. The integration of beavers into their landscape is a significant step towards a more balanced and thriving ecosystem, benefitting both the natural world and the local community.
Enjoy a comfortable ride to our beaver enclosure, where you can observe these fascinating animals from as close as half a metre away, safely behind a viewing window. Take your time watching the beavers in their natural habitat and discovering more about this exciting conservation project.

Beavers Experience
A brand-new wooden hide next to the pond where the beavers have made their home provides a comfortable platform from which to photograph or just observe these fascinating animals as they go about their daily lives.
The hide can either be booked exclusively for any number of people up to a maximum of four (two for all-night sessions), with each person having a chair and plenty of space at the viewing window to see the entire pond. Bookings are now being taken for summer 2026.
Alternatively, you can book a seat in a shared hide.
Recommended Photographic Equipment
For those that wish to take photographs, the beavers often come close to the hide, so it is
possible to get results with anything, including smartphones. That said, for the best results
a lens in the range 200mm – 500mm is recommended and given the timing of the beaver’s
main activities, expect to shoot with high ISO settings and a tripod would also be a very
useful addition.
